A deluge of fresh water flowing from China’s Yangtze River is heading toward Jeju waters, threatening scores of conch and abalone farms along the shore of the island.

Due to a record rain fall in the midland, China opened more hydro gates to the immense Sansha Dam this June and July, letting out 60,000 tons of water per second, much larger than its usual 40,000 tons per second recorded in previous years.

An influx of low saline water back in 1996 killed more than 184 tons of conch and abalone in Jeju, inflicting 5.9 billion won of financial damage to the island’s fishing business. The fresh water this time is about 8 meters thick and advanced to a point some 20 kilometers off the western coast of Jeju, according to a preliminary observation conducted on Aug. 18 by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute.

Furthermore, tens of thousands of toxic Nomura’s jellyfish are moving from the East China Sea to the island as well, posing potential threats to summer beach goers and fishermen alike.
