Construction of naval base on hold

The construction of the strategic naval base on the southern side of Jeju Island has again come to another standstill. On Aug. 2 the Jeju provincial government and council requested that the central government hold on the ground breaking, at least for the time being, due to unresolved issues.

The controversial project has been in contention since its inception with those in support believing the base will help ensure that Jeju will be an island of peace as well as increase revenue in the Gangjeong area, while those who oppose do so, on grounds of environmental concerns and that the presence of the base may attract military conflict.

This is a major setback for the naval base considering their victory in late July when the Seoul Administrative Court rejected a lawsuit to prevent the construction of the base due to claims that the ministry approved of construction without conducting an environmental impact study.
