One of the cultural events which will be held in tandem with the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit is an evening of poetry, with 10 award-winning poets from the ASEAN nations and three from Korea.
The theme is “Beauty, Seed of Peace.” It is hosted by the Korea Literature Translation Institute and will be held June 1, with two public readings at Azalea Hall, Shineville Resort, Seogwipo.
The poems will be read in English, the official language of the summit meeting. Each poet will read two or three of their poems and talk about their works.
The goal of the event is to “improve mutual understanding through literary exchanges between Korea and ASEAN countries,” according to the hosting institute.
Poets attending, by pen name, are Ly Lan, Vietnam; Soubanh Luangrath, Laos; Kim Pick Pinum, Cambodia; Chiranan Pitpreecha, Thailand; Maung Swe Ngae, Myanmar; Baha Zain, Malaysia; Edwin Thumboo, Singapore; W.S. Rendra, Indonesia; Jawawi bin Haji Ahmad, Brunei; Rio Alma, The Philippines; and from Korea, Mun Chung-seong, Chong Hyon-jong and Kim Sun-woo.
The poets will arrive in Jeju on May 31 and attend a welcoming reception that evening. The reading takes place at 7 p.m. June 1 at the Shineville Resort, located east of Seogwipo-si on the 1132 road, on the beach in Tosan-ri.
