Jeju island will enhance its image as an excellent example of leading the development of creative tourism, a new tourism brand which is gaining prominence. The 2009 Asia-Pacific Creativity Forum on Culture and Tourism will be held in conjunction with the ASEAN-ROK Summit at the Shilla Jeju Hotel, Jeju Island, from June 3 to 5.

Attendance for this forum is expected to reach more than 500 including Francesco Frangialli, former secretary general of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Marion Joppe, president of Travel and Tourism Research Association-Canada Chapter, Nazalina Lim, former minister of tourism of the Philippines, and I Gede Ardika, former minister of culture and tourism of Indonesia.

Co-hosted by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this three-day forum will provide a platform for an unprecedented level of discussion and analysis on various issues of creative tourism under the theme of “From Cultural Tourism to Creative Tourism – Challenges, Opportunities, and Possibilities.” This forum also aims to exchange opinions on how to keep up with the growth in demand for the shift from cultural tourism to creative tourism.

Until now, tourism has centered mostly on cultural tourism which utilizes natural, cultural, and historical tourist destinations in different parts of the world, particularly linked to its location. However, there has been a need to explore the interface between tourism, culture and creativity, as a result of a growing competition in the cultural tourism market and the desire for unique, sustainable new tourism products. The creative tourism, thus, involves more dynamic interaction resulting in a convergence of movies, art, architecture, performance, design and even intangible experiences in addition to the traditional elements of tourism.

“The 2009 Asia-Pacific Creativity Forum on Culture and Tourism to Creative Tourism will be an opportunity for experts from various fields in tourism, culture and arts to explore sustainable strategies for creative tourism as a new economic growth engine,” said Prof. Song Jae Ho, chair of the organizing committee of the forum. Song also said, “we are seeking to make this forum international and spearhead the development of creative tourism in the Asian-Pacific regions by creating a new tourism model for developing countries.”

This forum will also adopt “Jeju Declaration on Creativity of Culture and Tourism” in order to reflect the composite views and commitments of participants and prompt a successful implementation of future tasks.

The three-day forum programs will a keynote speech by Francesco Frangialli, former UNWTO secretary general and chairman of UNWTO strategic group, and two round table sessions attended by about 40 panels on the second day, and the adoption of the Jeju Declaration and a guided tour of some selected sites on the last day.
