Jeju’s waters have been placed off limits to North Korean vessels in the first response to the sinking of the navy corvette Cheonan, which a probe ruled was caused by a North Korean torpedo.
Under the terms of an inter-Korean agreement that took effect in 2005, North Korean ships were permitted to transit through the Jeju Strait, saving more than 85 kilometers sailing time and fuel. Minister of National Defense, Kim Tae Young, announced on May 24 that from that date, South Korea would block all North Korean vessels from entering the Jeju Strait.
The ban was to prevent the North Korean Navy from gathering information on tactics and environment under the guise of commercial shipping, he said. At the time of going to press, no response to the ban had been registered by North Korea.
