Picking of bracken prohibited

The Government of South Korea has confirmed the 11th outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease since April of this year. In early May the animals exhibited symptoms associated with the disease, such as blisters on the nose. According to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries the outbreak caused local officials to quarantine the farm and limit the movement of people and vehicles in the immediate vicinity.

In order prevent the foot-and-mouth disease from reaching Jeju Island the picking of fern bracken in areas near communal ranches has been fully prohibited. The Jeju Self-Governing Province held an emergency meeting with the sole purpose of discussing measures to stop the foot-and-mouth disease from infecting the island. The assembly came to the conclusion that there is a high possibility of infection as many people are entering communal ranchers with the purpose of picking bracken. In an attempt to ward off this behavior the provincial government has placed supervisory officers around suspicious areas to hopefully limit exposure to potentially infected livestock.
