Jeju officials set up memorial altars for petty officer Cha Kyun Seok in Jeju and Seogwipo on April 25, so that islanders can mourn his death.

Cha was one of 46 sailors who died on March 26 when the Korean Navy corvette Cheonan sank near the North Korean border after an apparent torpedo attack launched from a still unidentified party. Cha was from Seogwipo, and joined the Cheonan in October 2008.

About 100 mourners paid tribute at a private memorial set up in Pyongan Church a day earlier, where Cha had attended when in Jeju. Fellow sailors who survived the attack recalled that Cha used to share tangerines delivered from his Seogwipo home.

A North Korean torpedo attack is widely suspected to have sunken the Cheonan but the South Korean government has yet to formally point the finger at Pyongyang.
