Arirang Radio is Korea’s first all-English radio station. Funded by the Korean government, its remit is to provide information on Korea for foreigners, provide English learning tools for Koreans, advertise Korea around the world and act as something of a bridge between Korea and the rest of the world.

Prior to April 5, Jeju-produced content didn’t feature widely on Arirang. April 5, however, saw the launch of the station’s new revamped schedule in which, for the first time, Arirang found room for a daily Jeju-produced program. Aimed specifically at the foreign community on the island, “All That Jeju” airs every weekday night from 10:25 to midnight. In Arirang’s new studio complex on the 8th floor of the Jeju Venture Maru building in Jeju City the day before the launch, program host Jenie Hahn, known as DJ Jenie on the show, spoke about the thinking behind this new venture.

“Arirang felt they needed more Jeju content in their output, and it was felt that it wasn’t really satisfactory and didn’t really make a lot of sense to broadcast programs from Seoul which touched upon matters pertaining to Jeju. Arirang felt Jeju deserved its own pro-gram,” she said. “Another important factor in their decision to produce a pro-gram here in Jeju was that Jeju Island was one of the first regions in Korea to allow Arirang to have an FM frequency. [Busan also has Arirang on FM but elsewhere in Korea, listeners need a DMB device or Internet connection to listen in.] I think that was an important consideration.”

As regards content, Hahn said ideas were still being bandied around the production office but some of those penciled in for regular slots included “Jolt into Jeju,” where two foreigners resident on Jeju talk about the cultural misunderstandings and problems they’ve experienced since their arrival; a “Kaleidoscope” interview in which people from all over the island and from different backgrounds (not just foreigners but all English speakers) offer different perspectives on Jeju life; and a “Tag Interview” with someone living overseas who has either been to or intends to come to Jeju. The tag part of the name comes from getting that person to recommend another such person in a different country for the next interview, and the slot aims to link Jeju with people all over the world.

Hahn said that the main target audience for the daily national show is the English-speaking community on Jeju and ex-pressed her “sincere hope” that “All That Jeju” might become “a medium for the foreigner community to tell us what they have to say.” She went on to describe the native and foreign communities here as “oil and water.” She said, “I’ve always felt that there was no meeting of the two. The two communities stood on their own with no interaction; no coming together. I hope through this show we can bridge the gap between the foreigner and the native communities.”

It may be rather a lofty ambition for a light-hearted radio program, especially if the gap between the two communities is as wide as Hahn believes, but one cannot argue with the nobleness of the intent and the spirit of welcome, inclusion and generosity that informs it. Time alone will tell whether Hahn realizes her ambition to be that bridge between the two groups, but she and her team plan to have a lot of fun trying, and en route her listeners are in for an eclectic and esoteric mix of late night voices and music on their radios.

“All that Jeju” broadcasts Monday through Friday from 10:25 p.m. to midnight on 88.7 FM in Jeju City, and on 88.1 FM in the Seogwipo area.

The writer was a guest on the inaugural broadcast of “All that Jeju.” Jenie Hahn is also a contributor to The Jeju Weekly.
