The ban on the import of pork from other regions of the country since 2002 has been conditionally lifted.
As a result of that, Jeju residents and tourists in Jeju can taste pork from other regions. Until now, Jeju residents and tourists were able to have only Jeju pork, which is more expensive than pork from other regions.
For now, the wholesale price of 1kg of Jeju pork belly is about 20,000 won, which is about 54% higher than the price of other regions sold at about 13,000 won.
Since April 18, 2002, the ban on the import of pork from other regions has been maintained to prevent swine fever.
Jeju provincial government recently reviewed whether it should import pork from other regions since the illegal dumping of pig manure by some farmers have been found.
However, because Jeju pork is still preferred by customers in spite of the relatively high price, there are strong demand to make a policy to prevent pork from other regions to be sold as Jeju pork.. |
