As Jeju residents around the island celebrate the arrival of 2010 and make plans for the year ahead, we at The Jeju Weekly have been making changes and resolutions of our own.

The first is my own return to the island that I left a little less than two years ago, but this time in the role of editor-in-chief for this still-young publication. I have just come from being part of the team that launched a new daily English-language newspaper, the Jakarta Globe, in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Prior to my time there, I had a long association with Korea, having first come here in 2001 to find that the country keeps drawing me back each time I leave. I have worked as a deputy editor for the Seoul-based JoongAng Daily in addition to other publications overseas and look forward to helping nurture and grow Jeju Weekly.

Another new addition to the team is Jean K. Min, a native Korean who is a skilled and fluent journalist in both Korean and English. Min joined online news portal OhmyNews as director of the international division in early 2004. In that position, he planned and executed the launch of OhmyNews International, an English-language edition seeking to replicate the success of the Korean portal on the global stage.

A lifetime follower of communication theorist Marshall McLuhan, he experimented with various media as a communications designer at Cheil Communications, Samsung’s in-house advertising agency. He contributed to launching Seoprise.com, an influential political Webzine that, together with OhmyNews, played a vital role in electing former South Korean reformist president, the late Roh Moo Hyun, in 2002.

Min’s articles on the arrival in Korea of the “Jesus” phone and a proposed underwater railway tunnel to Jeju featured recently in Jeju Weekly, which he now joins fulltime as project director.

The third and most important role at the helm of Jeju Weekly is filled by our publisher and founder, Song Jung Hee, ably aided and supported by her husband, Prof. Kim Gyong Ho, as our executive editor. Song wrote in Jeju Weekly’s inaugural issue that its clear goals were to both promote Jeju and make it more foreigner-friendly. Aided by a talented and dedicated team of administrative and creative staff and freelancers, we strive to continually reach those goals.

We envision playing an important role in informing, educating, entertaining and being part of the wider community of Jeju residents, visitors and all those who care about this environmental, geological and cultural treasure. And, because we are ultimately here for you, the reader, we welcome your input, feedback, suggestions and comments, either by mail, fax or e-mail to editor@jeju weekly.com. If you’re interested in joining our team as a regular or occasional contributor, please also contact me. Together let’s enjoy 2010 and beyond on Jeju Island.
