A recent survey by Samsung Economic Research Institute saw Jeju’s olle walking trails ranked 8th among the 2009 Top 10 Hit Products, but the healthy escape from modern life lost out to girl power, high technology, means of fighting the much-dreaded flu and a historical television drama. The most popular product chosen from 52 items selected by SERI, in what may come as no surprise to citizens and residents of the country, was the traditional rice wine - makgeolli.

SERI, a leading think-tank for research on economics, management and industry in Korea, surveyed more that 11,500 online readers and asked them to choose their top 10 products of 2009 from those selected. The results, announced mid-December, were as follows:

1. Makgeolli
2. Flu-themed products (e.g. masks and sanitizers)
3. Kim Yu Na, the 19-year-old figure skater who is reigning world champion
4. LED TV
5. Smart phones
6. “Queen Seondeok,” a television drama
7. Pop girl groups
8. Jeju olle tours
9. Public housing
10. KT QOOK, an all-in-one telecommunications service package

In announcing the results, the institute said that the increasing popularity of olle trails signals a paradigm shift in tourism to a slower pattern that allows tourists to experience fully the value of their surroundings.

“Olle walking has given added value to the concept of tours of Jeju Island in the way that visitors rediscover the beauty of the island,” SERI said.

And what could be a better way to rest after your walk than with a cup of apparently nutritious makgeolli, while watching figure-skating or drama on your LED TV in your small apartment.
All of which have been sanitized, of course.
