According to a survey by the Korea Tourism Organization, 53.7 percent of respondents said they would consider traveling abroad next year, while 52.9 percent said they would travel within the country. Some 7 percent said they would travel both within and outside Korea.

The survey was answered by 500 adults in seven major cities, including Seoul, Busan and Daegu.
Though there is little difference between the preferences over tourist destinations, the trend has reversed from that of this year. A combination of factors - the worldwide financial slump, high foreign exchange rates and influenza A (H1N1) - had led to a decline in overseas travel.

The tourism industry is expecting a high demand for travel. “There are many customers waiting to travel who postponed their plans this year. We are expecting more customers next year as negative factors subside,” an industry insider said.

More than half, or 52 percent, of the survey participants had plans to go on a trip next year, while 48 percent did not plan to do so.

Among the overseas destinations, China topped the list at 19 percent, followed by Japan (16 percent) and the United States (9 percent).

In Korea, Jeju Island was the most popular destination with 45 percent. Gangwon Province (25 percent) and Namhae (3 percent) placed second and third, respectively.
