Night tours have long been a priority for the local tourism industry to increase visitor satisfaction in the summer months and the first of the summer kicks off on Saturday, July 18, with “One Summer Night,” a music concert at Jeju City’s Gwandeokjeong from 7:30pm to 9pm.

Not only will visitors be able to listen to some of Jeju’s top bands, including ska outfit South Carnival, but there will also be juice tasting to cool down after a hot summer’s day and plenty of local agricultural products for sale.

The event will be held at the front of Gwandeokjeong, a former military training ground and one of Jeju’s most historic buildings. Night events are to become the norm there as extended hours keep it open until 9pm every Saturday between July 18 and the end of August.

Jeju Mokgwanaji and Gwandeokjeong, both key cultural assets for Wondosim, Jeju’s historic old town, have both long been identified for the development of night tours, an area in which Jeju is relatively weak compared to competing tourist destinations.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is thus heavily promoting night tours on Jeju alongside Jeju Tourism Organization and together a number of projects are underway to improve services for tourists.

Earlier in April the nationwide “Jeju Special Night” contest was held and people proposed storytelling night tours to boost Jeju tourism and local businesses.

The tours were split into themes such as nights with friends, romantic nights, family nights out, midnight beauty and more.

Some of the prize winners include:
- Developing Jeju Starlight World Park and Planetarium for romantic night storytelling events.
- Seogwipo walking route: Seogwipo Alangjoeul Street - Maeil Olle Traditional Market- Lee Jungseop Street- Utopia-ro (Jaguri Coast)
- Family night tour: Dumengi Golmok - Dongmun Traditional Market - Guksu Culture Street - Nanta Performance - Jeju Starlight World Park and Planetarium
- “Youth and Music” tour of Jeju’s City Hall entertainment district
- Seogwipo nature tour: Gogeunsan Oreum - Geolmae Eco Park- Cheonjiyeon Falls - Rosemarine open-air cafe)

The courses were scored according to their suitability for couples, groups and families and for their potential economic benefit to the local economy. Other key points were clear walking paths, food sellers, popular sightseeing sites and other activities.

Jeju Tourism Organization will also divide the courses according to location — Jeju City old town, Shin Jeju, Jungmun and Seogwipo downtown — and produce maps, websites, e-books and pdf files for domestic and overseas tourists.

To maximize awareness of the courses, Jeju Tourism Organization will be producing promotional materials from July and holding SNS events throughout the summer so tourists can share their experiences with friends.

The first event of the summer is happening on Saturday, July 18, so make sure you are there to enjoy the opening of the summer!
