The Jeju government has begun talks with a prestigious British girls’ school to set up a campus at the planned Education City.

According to a press release from the Jeju Development Center, the Jeju government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with North London Collegiate School, London, England on April 1. The agreement is the first step toward establishing a branch of the school in Jeju. Under the terms of the agreement, the Jeju Provincial Office of Education will assist the school in its establishment here, while the British school will provide “high-level curriculum and academic plans.” The JDC will provide facilities for the school.

The partnership is designed to promote Jeju’s “high-level education by providing internationally-recognized academic links,” according to the JDC.

The North London Collegiate School was established in 1850, and is a day school for girls from elementary through high school. It has garnered many awards for excellence over the years, including being named Leading Independent Secondary School of the Year twice in the last 10 years.

The school’s Web site states: “We have a wonderful heritage at the school, and a proud tradition of producing independent, often pioneering, young women with the drive and confidence to make the most of opportunities and a difference in the world.”

Notable North London Collegiate School alumni include medical pioneer Marie Stopes; CNN correspondent Sarah Sultoon; psychologist and author Suzie Orbach and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The Jeju government is also seeking partnerships with other British schools, including King’s College, St. John’s on the Hill, and Bromsgrove School.
