Just a little more than a year after its launch, Jin Air, the low-cost carrier of Korean Air, launched its first international service, to Bangkok on Dec. 6. Earlier in the year, the airline had announced it would begin flying to several destinations in Asia.

“Jin Air’s Incheon-Bangkok route will provide passengers a convenient flight schedule in the morning for travel and business trips,” said Kim Jae-kun, president and chief executive of Jin Air, at a ceremony held at Incheon International Airport.

Flights to Bangkok on other local and foreign airlines depart in the after-noon, but Jin Air plans to fly its 180-seat Boeing 737-800 passenger aircraft every day from Seoul at 9:20 a.m. The airfare is also 20 to 30 percent lower than that offered by full-service carriers.

“Jin Air will become a front-runner in the Asian budget carriers industry with our own competitive pricing, flight schedules and, most of all, safety operations,” Kim said.

The airline passed the International Air Transport Association’s Operational Safety Audit in April, becoming the first Korean budget carrier to do so.

In addition to its international service to Bangkok, Jin Air is planning on expanding its routes to other destinations including Osaka, Weihai in China and Guam.

There are four local budget carriers: Jin Air, Jeju Air, Air Busan and Eastar Jet. Jeju Air was the first of the four to offer international flights, between Seoul and Osaka and Kitakyushu, last year, while Air Busan, the budget airline of Asiana Airlines, has plans to fly from Busan to Fukuoka starting next year.
