Jeju saw its biggest increase in the number of tourists this year, exceeding 6 million visitors and generating record profits. As of Nov. 30, a total of some 6,014 million people - 5.43 million domestic tourists and 584,000 foreign tourists - had visited the island in 2009. The 11.2 percent increase over the same period in 2008 was the first double-digit growth since 2000. A surge in the number of Chinese tourists was a big factor in the increase. This combined with an H1N1 flu scare and the poor economy, which made Korean vacationers less inclined to go overseas. On Nov. 30, officials of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Jeju Tourism Association attended an event at Jeju International Airport to commemorate the 6 millionth tourist for the year to the island.
