In a bid to stop sliding prices and safeguard the reputation of island growers, the Jeju Special Self-Govern-ing Province has announced a crack-down on the trade in substandard fruit. The government estimates that 256,000 tons of the popular citrus product has already gone to markets around the country, which is 40 percent of the expected total. However, prices have fallen to just over 7,000 won per 10 kilogram box, which is about half of last years prices. In an effort to halt illegal sales and shipments, the government will send inspection teams to growing areas and increase monitoring at markets and delivery centers.
