Name: “NY Brunch at Malt 9”

Where: 89 Noyeon-ro, Shin Jeju
At the Grand Hotel junction in Shin Jeju, slightly east and uphill of the Jeju Grand Hotel itself. Look for the Malt 9 sign and take the stairs to the third floor.

When: Weekends only 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Note: Husband and wife Nayeon and Timo use the Malt 9 (see here) premises at weekends only. If you arrive on a weekday you will be left entirely brunchless.

Menu: Western-style brunch menu with some interesting drinks.

Taste: The emphasis is on homemade style. The owners prepare everything themselves. The solitary sausage that came with my brunch was not quite up to British standards but fine for Korea. Everything tasted good. The taste of my healthy apple cinnamon-fermented drink was (purposely) bitter.

Price: Brunches are priced 10,000-14,000 won with smoothies at 6,000 won and coffees starting at 1,500 won. I wouldn’t spend this much on brunch every weekend, but as a special treat it’s fine.

Atmosphere: As this brunch concept is very new, it is still building its customer base. Consequently, the owners will give you the personal attention that every customer deserves. They will come and ask you if everything is okay and be happy to chat in English (or Korean). In return, all you have to do is spread the word!

Staff: This lovely couple makes you feel right at home with the simple touches, like letting you have your drink first and asking if the food is okay. Due to their new preparation technique, you won’t have long to wait for your eats anyway. So, if you have just a limited time available for some cooking just like home, this is your place!
