Yongduam, the jutting black volcanic rock, shaped like the roaring head of a dragon, attracts many legends about its genesis. One has it that a dragon, shot by an arrow when stealing jade from Mt. Halla, fell down and sank into the ocean and his head turned to rock. Another says a white horse was turned to stone after dreaming of being a dragon. Situated on the road hugging the coast north of Jeju City, there are various coffee shops, bars, and restaurants for visitors nearby. The area is also popular for evening strolls or morning jogs with plenty of picnic spots along the coast. The city’s nearest beach at Iho is also just a few kilometers further west. Just 15 minutes by taxi from Jeju International Jeju Ferry Terminal, there is no admission fee and it is open year-round. The rock is next to the Yongdam Park where a Tourist Information Center is located.
