Do you know anything about a small island located at the end of the Korean peninsula? Jeju Island, which is one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of Nature’, has a long, precious history and culture. From exclusive dialects to beautiful natural scenery, everything that exists on this island grabs everyone’s attention. Today, in this gorgeous island of Jeju, “The 2013 Jeju JDC Global Festival” was held at Jeju Science Park. With different kinds of people from different countries, people enjoyed their time with loved ones.

Out of all the foreigners who were experiencing Jeju culture, one German man grabbed my attention. He was giving baguettes and warm wine to visitors. With a big smile and kindness, he welcomed everyone, including me and my friends. This gentleman, Sven Schelwach, who is currently cooperating with designers in JDC, said, “I am now on this beautiful island for almost 2 years. As a designer and teacher in Hongik University, I love these kinds of festivals, full of charming designs and people.”

Not only were three various foods and cultures, but also various activities, such as handicrafts, a trick-art photo zone, and music talent show. Since there were a lot of activities, young children were all smiling and laughing while holding on to their mom’s hands tightly. Even though they were all from different parts of the world, they were communicating and understanding each other.

Another interesting woman from the United States, Alexis Oesterle, was welcoming people with her own warm smile. “I am truly loving Jeju. I have been here for about 2 years, and I am spending my time playing volleyball, surfing, and swimming with my friends. Today, I came here to help and share all the stories and cultures with everyone. I hope it will be a good time for all of us.” With a delightful smile, Alexis was cooking apple sauce with a few crackers.

Like Sven and Alexis, there were more than fifty people attending the festival who were getting along and having a good time. For me, as a junior journalist and visitor, it was a great experience to learn about other countries, such as Vietnam, Mongolia, India, Germany, and the United States. Like this year, everyone is now hoping to enjoy the Global Festival in 2014, on this magnificent island of Jeju.
