Total Jeju tourists hit 10 million on Nov, 28 for the year. The number of tourists hit 9,972,086, 11.4 percent more than the 8,953,940 on Nov. 26 last year. Tourists coming to Jeju were just 0.1 million in 1966, 1 million in 1983, and hit 5 million in 2005. After half a century of Jeju tourism, 10 million now make footfall.
Jeju now compares well to other international destinations: Hawaii greets 7,998,000, Bali 8,955,000 and Okinawa 5,836,000. Despite the economic downturn, domestic tourists increased by 4.9 percent and foreign tourists by 44.6 percent this year. Officials predict 10.5 million tourists by the year end.
Jeju Special Self-Govorning Province and Jeju Tourisim Association celebrated the era of 10 million tourists at Jeju International Airport alongside Jeju Tourism Organization and Korea Airports Corporation on Nov, 28. To celebrate the event, Jeju Tourism Organization is holding a duty free shop sale with 10-50 percent discounts and other events until the end of this year.
