On November 16th, JDC journilst had a trip to Hanwha aqua planet jeju. Hanwha aqua planet jeju is located in 서귀포시 성산읍 고성리 and it is open from 10 A.M to 7P.M. The telephone number is 064-780-0900. There are many performances at the aqua planet. You can see Haenyeo performances and also the ocean arena performance.

This is a picture of a Haenyeo performance. Do you know about Haenyeo? Haenyeo is a job for people who dive into water without any diving equipment and catch fish to earn money. Haenyeo are famous because they don’t use any diving equipment to breath under water. For example the American solider was wondering how Haenyeo can breath in the water for 2~3 minutes. He thought there was some special abilty in Haenyeos, so he went to jeju to find out if he was right. But he was incorrect. There was nothing special about the Haenyeo. He changed his mind and said “Haenyeo can dive without any diving equipment because they have their childern to take care of. Maternal affection is the special abilty.”

이하령,an expert of Haenyeo, also mention there is big problem because nowdays people don’t want to do Haenyeo, so it will be disapear soon. Haenyeo is a precious human cultural asset.They are jeju’s mother.

We have to protect Haenyeo. To protect Haenyeo, everyone needs to know about Haenyeo. Also the goverment should support Haenyeo school and advertise it,too.
