The haenyeo (sea women,) are female divers from the Korean province of Jeju. Many people who first saw haenyeo diving usually guess that the haenyeo would have a special ability to dive for such a long time, however that’s not the case. The Haenyeos’ ability comes from the motherly strength to earn a living for their family, even in a harsh environment. Thus, it can be considered a noble spritual heritage of Korea.
Despite its importance, haenyeo culture is disappearing. Very few want to do the job, or even learn about it. The chairman of Jeju Haenyeo Culture Preservation Association, Lee Han Young graduated from the Hansupul Haenyeo School even though he is a young man. He makes haenyeo-related content and runs various events to publicize the haenyeo. He said, that the association will keep struggling to preserve the haenyeo culture.
Haenyeo culture played a very important role on Jeju. However, this unique cultural heritage that once had flourished is now dying, and will vanish in the near future if the current generation’s apathy continues.
One old haenyeo said, “The mainlander’s point of view has changed. People used to consider me poor whenever they learned what I did, but nowadays, they express curiosity and respect towards my occupation and lifestyle.” People, especially from outside of Korea’s perspective is changing. The altered points of view can have a positive influence on the local tourism economy. Jeju people have to reminded that the haenyeo culture may provide a great competitive edge in the global tourism economy, especially as Jeju grows as a popular destination.
