As of Oct. 26, an estimated 1,590 people across Jeju Island had become ill with the H1N1 flu, with schools being especially hard hit. An average 100 people per day fell sick from swine flu in the period of Oct. 20-26.
Amid growing concerns over a potential flu pandemic, the Jeju Headquarters of Infectious Disease Management reported that the flu vaccination would become available on the island, with immunizations commencing on Oct. 27. The first tier of at-risk groups to receive the vaccine includes health care workers and quarantine officials. Also at higher risk of contracting H1N1, and next on the list for vaccination, are over 170,000 children, aged between 6 months 6 years, and pregnant women who will receive the vaccine in Nov and Dec.
Beginning in Jan. 2010, the flu vaccine will be available to the elderly, patients with chronic diseases, and soldiers. As more vaccine becomes available, it will be administered beyond these high-risk groups, with plans to start further immunizations in Feb. 2010.
