A place that makes people comfortable. A place where people can feel Jeju’s sense of community. It is the Jeju City Traditional 5-day Market, which opens every five days and has been running over 100 years.
There are many markets, but the 5-day market is a place that is big and sells many different things.There are unique sections such as the “grandmother” market place and the food section. On November 2nd, there were many people at the 5-day market.
One woman, Choi Hee Kyung who is 34 years old said, “I came today because I want to buy my son a dog, but I usually come here when I’m free. I think the 5-day market is good because there are cheap products and a sense of community. The best thing I can show to my children is Jeju’s sense of community and tradition.”
Hong Yeong Soon, 58, said, “I’ve ran this booth for over 30 years.
The 5-day market has many different products. It’s cheap and customers can bargain, so they can buy at a lower price and get more. The 5-day market is also good because we can see interesting things that we can’t find in the city.”
Jang Soon Nyeo who has run a booth in the 5-day market for over 20 years said, “It’s easier to sell products at the 5-day market than other places, because we can sell things directly when we farm. Customers can get products easier and cheaper.”
The Jeju City Traditional 5-day Market has love, a sense of community, and tradition. As a result, many people think the 5-day market is important to Jeju. |
