Between 1947~1954, many people died in Jeju as a result of the 4.3 massacres. The police murder many people under false accusations,without any cause, and without guilt. Approximatley 25,000-30,000 people died . Police cracked down when people talked about the 4.3 events.
Kim Cheol, a survivor of the massacres, said, “My grandmother, uncle and I ran to mountain with my village people when I was young. Then we listened to the sounds of guns. We escape to thornbush but my uncle was killed.” Cheol was injured by gun shot to the arm. . He said, “I cried but my but grandmother said ‘Hush! Bad people will find us if they hear the sound of your crying.’ I still don’t stretch my arm.” Later, Cheol moved his uncle’s grave but says his uncles brains remained in the hole. “Northwestward Young Men’s Association” killed many people. Their acts were cruel. Kim Cheol continued by saying, “ I lost my appetite when I heard the death rattle of blood. Many babies of pregnant women were taken and experimented on.”
‘Jeseol’, a movie about the 4.3 massacres won the “World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic” at the Sundance Move Festival.
