There is a high possibility that the domestic duty-free purchase limit will increase. The existing duty-free limit on purchases is 400 U.S dollars, but a new revision is proposing it become 800 dollars.
According to the Jeju Free International City Development Center and the Jeju Tourism Organ-ization the Cabinet Office stepped in to mediate the domestic duty-free purchase limit dispute. This was due to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance disagreeing over the amount.
The result means the purchase limit could be raised to 800 dollars. However, only 400 dollars of this would be tax-exempt; the remaining 400 dollars would still be open to taxes. In addition, the two parties came to an agreement where the number of annual purchases would decrease from six to five.
The Jeju Development Centre and some of Jeju’s duty-free shops commented on the proposed changes. They said, “If the limit on purchases is revised, we will find ways to help our customers with respect to them having to pay excessive taxes on their purchases.”
