Visitors to Jeju in the future are expected to search for tourist information mostly through their mobile devices.
Jeju therefore has plans to develop a service to take advantage of this situation. The Ministry of Security and Public Administration selected Jeju's new service as “best local challenge” as it is a smart tourism information service based on ‘big data.’ Jeju is planning to set up a big data service platform project in 2014. It already has 300 million won dedicated to the project.
The new tourism service would collect extensive information, including that about tourist numbers, tourist attractions, and the weather. It would then provide this information to tourists or tourism agencies upon request.
If the system is established, Jeju would be able to find out the age of tourists, their preferred destinations, transportation methods, and length of stay in any given place, all at a glance.
Jeju Province and tourism operators would be able to take advantage of this service for both policy-making and marketing purposes.
