On Oct. 12, the Jeju Free International Development Center (JDC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Branksome Hall, a prestigious Canadian school. The goal of the JDC is to establish a branch of Branksome Hall in Jeju’s proposed Global Education City.

As an International Baccalaureate, Branksome Hall, founded in 1903, is a world leader in international education. The boarding school educates girls from junior kindergarten level to university entrance level, and is located in downtown Toronto.

The MOU is part of a series of steps taken by the JDC towards the completion of the Jeju Global Education City project, which would make Jeju Island the English education hub of Asia. Earlier this year, North London Collegiate School, a prestigious girls’ school in the UK, confirmed its decision to formally assess the feasibility of starting an NLCS branch on Jeju.

According to Byon Jong-il, CEO of the JDC, two American schools, St. Albans in Washington DC and St. George’s in Rhode Island, are also very interested in the possibility of establishing their schools on Jeju, and are expected to sign MOUs soon. Once this happens, Jeju’s Global Education City will be a step closer to becoming a true hub of English education at an international level.
