Jeju’s Chilmoridang-Yeongdung Gut was inscribed as one of the 5 Korean cultural properties on the list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The listing was announced during the 5th committee meeting of the U.N. agency held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, Sept. 30.
The 5 assets are Ganggangsullae, a traditional group dance performed on national holidays, including Chuseok; Namsadangnori, a satiric play performed to make fun of Korean noblemen; Yeongsanjae, a re-enactment of Buddha’s delivery of the Lotus Sutra, to pray for the peace of the deceased; Cheoyongmu, a masked dance to drive away evil spirits and promote good fortune on New Year’s Eve; and Jeju Chilmoridang-Yeongdung Gut, a shaman ritual performed by women divers, or Haenyeo, to pray for calm seas and good catches. Jeju’s gut is performed in order to celebrate the arrival of the grandmother from the sea- Yeongdung Halmang, also known as the Sea Goddess.
