While Jeju is becoming a popular venue for horse racing or equestrian competitions, novice riders will soon have the opportunity of touring parts of Jeju on horseback.

The Jeju government is gearing up to develop “maro” or “horse roads” for the use of tourist-oriented horses and wagons. This move is also consistent with Jeju’s “low carbon, green growth” policy for tourism development.

Government sources said the project to build horse paths is a benchmark of Germany’s horseback riding which is the biggest such industry in the world and generates $6.3 billion in sales a year.

The project would enable visitors to “maros” to enjoy hiking along the trails as well as horseback riding. An estimated 100 million won (100,000 US dollars) has been set aside for the project.
