A stream of Jeju people recently offered their condolences for the death of former president, Kim Dae-jung.

Former President Kim, who survived assassination attempts during his years as a dissident and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his reconciliation efforts with North Korea, died Aug. 18, Tuesday at the age of 85.

Beginning early Aug. 19 people flocked to the memorial altars set up on the fourth floor auditorium of the Jeju Provincial Government's office and the second floor of Seogwipo City Hall to pay their tribute to the late Kim.

Provincial government officials, expressing their deep sorrow, decided to either postpone or scale back festivals scheduled between mourning period and Kim's official funeral.

The late Kim, president from 1998 to 2003, devoted his life to the nation's democratization and reconciliation with the North.

The state funeral for former President Kim Dae-jung was held Aug. 23, following six days of mourning. He was laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Dongjak-dong in southern Seoul.
