Jeju National Museum is holding a culture experience event at Jeju International Airport for all those who visit and live in Jeju in 2012. This event, titled “The scent of Jeju from the airport,” will feature various fun, hands-on activities to help people get a sense of Korean history and culture.

Programs include: a chance to see Korean traditional printing with famous works of Chusa Kim Jeong Hui, known as the greatest calligrapher of the Joseon Dynasty who spent years in exile on Jeju Island in the 1800s (For more on his life and work, please click here). The work of another Joseon calligrapher, Kim Hong Do, is also on tap.

Hands-on art activities include painting roof tiles and making Korean traditional paper fans, and in a more modern vein, decorating your cellphone with accessories with the designs of hoonminjeongeum (hangeul, the Korean alphabet), face sumaksae (convex roof-end tile with an image of a face), sangpyeong tongbo (Joseon coins), and mapae (a brass seal with the image or images of horses).

Some of these hands-on culture experience programs are based on the displayed artifacts at Jeju National Museum. There are more activities planned and they will change from week to week.

This special event will be presented every Thursday or Friday from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. at the 3rd floor of Jeju International Airport. Note from April the day of the week may change to Thursday. It is free of charge and will be open to the public until Dec. 20, 2012.

The program is part of the projects Jeju National Museum and the Korean Airports Corporation at Jeju agreed to in an MOU signed in 2010.
