Jeju provincial governor Kim Tae-hwan is facing a recall vote after advocating the controversial building of a naval base at Gangjeong Port, Seogwipo without properly weighing public opinion.

The Jeju Election Commission announced on Aug. 7 the start of a canvassing period ahead of vote on Aug. 26 which may unseat the governor if more than one third of eligible residents cast a vote and more than half of those are in favor of the recall. This is the first time for a provincial governor to face a confidence vote over a key policy decision.

Kim is suspended from duty for three weeks until Aug. 25, a day before residents go to the polls to decide whether he should continue in his post. Both Kim and an alliance of 30 local civic groups that has led the confidence vote lend their full support to promote their claims, including placing ads in newspapers and online, and holding public speeches.
