Jeju Island has long striven to establish itself as “an island of world peace.” Starting with former President of the U.S.S.R, Mikhail Gorbachev’s 1991 visit for a summit between Korea and the U.S.S.R, Jeju Island has had several opportunities to play host to talks between Northeast Asia, Europe and North America.
Its most recent undertaking is the Jeju Peace Forum, held biennially in Jeju since 2001.
The Fifth Jeju Peace Forum will be held this weekend, Aug. 11-13, at the Haevichi Hotel and Resort, hosted by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the International Peace Foundation and the East Asia Foundation.
Participants of the fifth forum will discuss new ways to bring about peace within the community of Northeast Asia, under the theme of mutual benefits and common prosperity in East Asia, while exploring Jeju’s role as an island of world peace.
A starting point for the discussion will be to consider a peaceful solution to “the Korean problem,” in which security concerns over North Korea are at the forefront. Entitled, “Shaping New Regional Governance in East Asia: A Common Vision for Mutual Benefit and Common Prosperity,” the Fifth Jeju Peace forum will be highlighted by two keynote speeches, delivered by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and South Korean Prime Minster Han Seung-soo.
Focusing on bringing together eminent scholars, professors and renowned figures from Northeast Asia, North America and Europe, the Jeju Peace Institute is organizing the forum to bring about more research on peace, security and economic integration.
Established on March 24, 2006, the Jeju Peace Institute was founded with the idea of promoting Jeju island as an international peace center. Managed by the International Peace Foundation, the JPI includes various branches of research and functions which include world conferencing, international transaction and cooperation, as well as education and publication.
By setting up a network with similar peace-related research institutes in Europe and North America, such as PRIO (International Peace Research Institute, Oslo), SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) and USIP (United States Institute of Peace), the JPI aims to become a model of research, dialogue, interaction and education, constructing a community of peace throughout Korea as well as security cooperation and economic integration within Northeast Asia.
Through the experience of organizing these peace forums, the JPI seeks to create its own identity among the international community.
The first forum, held June 15-17, 2001, with the theme “Co-peace and co-prosperity in Northeast Asia,” featured a keynote speech by former South Korean President Kim Dae Jung.
William Perry, former U.S. defense minister, also attended the forum, commenting on then President Kim Dae Jung’s speech and the importance of bringing the United States and North Korea together at a summit.
The second forum in October 2003 focused on “Building a Peace Community in Northeast Asia.” Former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun gave a keynote speech.
While the first three forums shared a similar theme of promoting peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia, the fourth forum held in 2007 discussed how to apply European experiences in security, political and economic fields to Northeast Asia.
