Shin Young Rok, Jeju United player, emerges from coma after 50 days |
|
A Jeju United FC player who spent the last 50 days in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit of Jeju Halla Hospital recovered consciousness in the last few days and has now been moved to a general therapeutic room.
According to a statement issued by Jeju Halla Hospital on June 27, although Shin Young Rok is still gravely ill, he is conscious and stable enough to be moved out of the ICU.
He is suffering from pneumonia and has seizures. He was on an artificial respirator for most of those 50 days, but the breathing tube has since been removed and he his breathing on his own. He is able to say the words “mom,” “dad” and “thanks.”
”Shin is able to recognize people around him,” said the chief of Neurology, Dr. Jeon Jong-eun. However, because of the initial lack of oxygen during the first minutes of his collapse on the soccer pitch in Jeju City, Shin is still not able to react quickly. There is cautious optimism that he will make a full recovery.
This morning, United manager Park Kyung Hoon visited Shin, and later told reporters that his eyes look bright, and he “will be able to stand up again.”
