Whether you are a discerning cognoscenti or a receptive listener, or an elegant classical music lover or a music fan who loves percussive outbursts, the biggest music festival of the island awaits you this summer.

The 2009 Midsummer Night Beach Festival starts at 8 p.m, July 20 with an opening ceremony and continues through August 9 at the open-air concert hall, perhaps the most amazing dome-roofed outdoor stage on Jeju island. Set on a long stretch of the beach waterfront with a Ramada Plaza Hotel towering behind, the concert hall is in Topdong in Jeju-si, which has been under gradual transformation into an art and recreation area.

The music is classical and populist. The long-running, free festival will continue varied programming of the upbeat tradition, featuring a variety of repertoire from classical, and Korean classical, to instrumental and vocal. Adding to the vibrancy of the festival's mood are play and dance performances, which will enable audience members to move, react, and applaud.

The summer music festival expects to be the biggest ever this year, bringing as many as 1,100 musicians from 48 teams; 10 guest teams and 38 in-residence including Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, Cantabile Ensemble, Halla Wind Ensemble, and Jeju Sinfonietta 40.

This year there will also be renowned pop singers and bands making special appearances as part of a plan to engage a broader range of audiences in the festival.

"The festival ‘cools’ down this summer," says Kim Chang Hyun, a local festival promoter of the Jeju provincial government. "For tourists, it will create unforgettable memories of summer nights under the stars. And for Jeju musicians, it is a great chance to boost creative and artistic spirit."

The festival began in 1994 and has been held for 16 summers.
The outdoor stage is near E-Mart in Topdong, Jejusi, and about a 10-minute bus ride from Jeju International Airport and Jeju Port.
