World-famous opera singer Paul Potts, 40, has agreed to become an honorary ambassador for Jeju Island in the New7Wonders campaign.

Governor Woo Keun Min appointed the UK-based singer as an honorary ambassador of N7W activities for Jeju Island on May 6. Not hiding his gratitude, Woo voiced his expectation that the move would encourage more people to discover Jeju’s beauty. Potts has set a good example by overcoming obstacles in his own career to become a world-famous tenor.

Potts' performances in Europe during his world tour are expected to raise Jeju’s international profile, helping to overcome one of the main problems facing Jeju’s bid — weak name recognition overseas — thus contributing to a higher ranking for Jeju in the N7W campaign.

The recent 2011 Paul Potts & Kevin Kern Tour was held in seven Korean cities, including Jeju on May 7 at the Jeju Arts Center.

Paul Robert Potts’ singing career

Potts was a former manager at a mobile phone store and has said in interviews that he had been bullied in school, resulting in him losing self-confidence.

But with luck and talent he won the first series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2007 (Britain’s Got Talent is a talent show that televises its auditions. Paul’s audition received a standing ovation from an audience of over 2,000 people).

He recorded his first album “One Chance,” which claimed the top spot in the UK Album Charts. Since then, he has released three albums, attracting international attention with his performances on YouTube recording millions of views.
