Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has announced a decision to purchase all privately-owned land within the Gotjawal area by 2013. Gotjawal are considered the lungs of Jeju Island.

Officials say that this decision is expected to minimize the number of environmental and legal issues that come from the private ownership of such important and fragile ecosystems as found in the Gotjawal forests.

This year 5.6 billion won is on the budget to purchase 80 hectares of Seonheul and Hankyung Gotjawal areas. The accumulated expenditure for this project since 2009 would reach 18.1 billion won, as the gross area purchased would come to 258 hectares.

Jeju government has allocated 31.2 billion won for the purchase, and is planning to request a contribution of 7 billion won from the Forestry Service of the central government next year.
