“Good Morning! Korea!”

The motto of this year's multicultural event organized by YWCA, it is in celebration of Labor Day and has occurred every year on May 1 since 1998.

An extremely popular day-long outing, participants sign up for it well in advance.

Each year the event includes visits to some of Jeju's most beautiful sites.

Last year, with a motto of “I'm from Jeju!”, the journey took in Saeseon (Birds Island) and Saeyungyo (Saeyun Bridge), a tour on the Seogwipo cruise ship, and the enjoyment of Camellia Hill which is the largest botanical garden in Asia.

This year's participants journeyed to Seongsan Ilchulbong, followed by a trip to Udo Island.

The group traveled by bus first to Seongsan Ilchulbong, where they climbed this spectacular volcanic cone set in the sea, an excursion followed by lunch and a period of recreational events.

Traveling to Udo thereafter, everyone enjoyed more trekking before returning to Jeju City.

The purpose of this event is to bring people from various cultures together with Korean workers for a day filled with enjoyment, natural beauty, and a celebration of Jeju as well as the potential for new intercultural friendships.

Now in its 13th year, it is deemed a resounding success.

This year's attendees hailed from Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, and Nepal, as well as Korea. In total there were 76 foreign and 60 Korean volunteer staff members.

Led by President Shin Kyung In, YWCA organizes and staffs the event. There are 27 participating organizations in total, and a number of contributing individuals.

Now in her 9th year at YWCA, Shin was elected its president in February of this year. She is dedicated to YWCA's offering of programs and services not only for Jeju women but for the foreign community of Jeju as well. She has also been made chairperson of the provincial government's new multicultural families committee.

“Foreign workers living in Seoul alone may find life normally hard,” Shin said, “but here on this beautiful island, with the friendly and warm people of Jeju such as those attending this annual Labor Day event, foreign workers can resolve their stress.”

Dr. Hilty is a cultural health psychologist.
