Jeju New7Wonder campaign a 'national agenda'On March 18, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism signed a MOU to work toward the selection of Jeju as a New7Wonder of Nature |

“The Korean government recognizes the Jeju’s New7Wonders issue as on ‘the national agenda,’” the Minister of Culture and Tourism Jung Byung Guk said at the MOU Signing Ceremony for Pursuing Jeju-New7Wonders Selection on March 18 held at the International Convention Center Jeju. He showed the ministry’s will to be the “hands and feet” of Jeju Island.
“We have encountered an important and meaningful opportunity. This is a great chance to raise Korea’s international status by globalizing the tourist industry. Beyond becoming an advanced country, Korea could become a culturally strong nation,” Minister Jung said.
“The New7Wonders foundation, which had become famous after announcing the New7Wonders of the World, is pursuing to select the New7Wonders of Nature. Jeju was selected among the final 28 candidates, and the final selection will be held this upcoming Nov. 11,” said Minister Jung. “If selected as one of the New7Wonders of Nature, Jeju will have a great opportunity to widely introduce its precious natural resources and become an international tour city.”
“President Lee [Myung Bak] participated in the vote this January. The National Assembly adopted a supporting resolution. By cooperation with each other, various departments are carrying out publicity activities through foreign networks. Not only self-governing bodies but also private organizations are supporting the selection of Jeju as one of the New7Wonders. It is inspiring that voluntary participation of people is increasing. By everyone’s efforts, Jeju has increased its ranking for 12 weeks since December,” he said.
“The ministry will continue doing its best for Jeju’s selection as one of the New7Wonders,” Jung said. “With SBS and the Pan-Regional Promotion Committee, we are preparing the ‘D-200 [countdown] event.’”
“By forming a close cooperation system with government organizations, we will support publicity activities to encourage people to vote,” Jung added. “All Koreans are heading forward hand in hand with the world. I am sure that [Jeju] will be confirmed on November 11 by the final selection of New7Wonders of Nature.”
On March 18, Lee Cham, president of the Jeju MICE Promotion Committee, who participated in the event as the representative of MICE industry, introduced specific activities.
“If everyone cooperates and Jeju becomes one of the New7Wonders of Nature, the beauty of Korea will be recognized by the world. If selected, not only will Jeju receive advantages, but Korea will also stand out as a tourist spot,” he said.
