Jeju Governor Woo Keun Min met with Yeum Bong Ran, China Consular in Gwangju, on March 11 to discuss matters of concern to Jeju and China and requested that China set up a consulate in Jeju promptly, something which President Lee Myung Bak and Chinese Premier Wen Jia Bao agreed upon last May during The Third Trilateral Summit Meeting at ICC Jeju. Yeum agreed that a consulate is necessary to streamline visa applications for Jeju citizens and for the protection of Chinese citizens while here. In addition, Woo detailed plans to expand the number of restaurants catering to Chinese tourists and system improvements so they can use their native driver’s licenses here.
Woo also asked for China’s support in Jeju’s bid to become one of the New7Wonder of Nature. In response, Yeum praised Jeju’s bid and promised that she would help by promoting it to Chinese living on Jeju.
