It was found that about one of two airline passengers flying between Jeju-Gimpo flew with budget airlines.

On Feb. 7, the airlines and The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, released a report saying that a total of 643,500 people used the Jeju-Gimpo air route during January, a 2.9 percent (18,400) increase from the same time period last year.

Korean Air, with a total of 174,000 passengers in January, held the largest share (27 percent).
Jeju Air had 117,000 passengers (18.2 percent), Asiana Airlines 116,000 (18 percent), Jin Air 82,000 (12.8 percent), Eastar Jet 81,000 passengers (12.7 percent), and T’way Air with 72,000 passengers (11.3 percent).

This shows that budget airlines currently hold 55 percent of the Jeju-Gimpo market; this is the first time they have exceeded 50 percent. Jeju Air, which increased its number of daily round-trip flights from nine to 12 last November, sold tickets for 10,000 won on a first-come, first-served basis this January. This created a sharp increase in Jeju Air’s market share.

“Since low-cost airlines were recognized by people for their low cost as well as their safety and high-quality service, it is expected that those airlines will have an even higher percentage of passengers from now on,” an airline officer said.
