Work on Jeju Harbor International Cruise Terminal is kicking into high gear.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on Dec. 15 that 2 billion won of the governmental budget will be allocated to the Jeju Harbor International Cruise Terminal project.

The government began the project in August, investing 800 million won to the construction of the terminal, which can accommodate international and domestic passengers coming to the island via Jeju Harbor.

The project is set to finish construction by the end of 2012 with a total investment of 17 billion won in private and public money, after the design work ends in May next year.

The terminal will be a three story building with 5,740m2 of space, a landmark that befits its status as a gateway to an international tourist port.

Even though the construction plan was originally to be a private sector investment project, the government explained that after consultation with concerned departments including the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, feasibility studies revealed the project may prove problematic. The government then stepped in with 17 billion won.

Regarding the construction process, a Jeju governmental official said, “We will be able to build an International Cruise Terminal as a landmark for the hub of Northeast Asia tourism industry.”

“As 2 billion won is allocated to the [project], the business will face no difficulties.”

The Jeju government expects that after completion the terminal to be a tourist attraction along with West Breakwater of Jeju Harbor.
