“Be remarkable. Branksome Hall is more than meets the eye.”

That’s the catchy introductory phrase of the school brochures which were set on tables at the special dinner event held in the Shilla Hotel, Seoul on Nov. 16.

Karen Murton, principal of Branksome Hall Canada, Peter Kenny, managing director of Branksome Hall Asia and a host of other dignitaries celebrated the establishment of Branksome Hall Asia at the ceremony. The evening also included the official launch of the Branksome Hall Asia Web site and unveiling of the architect’s vision of the school, a glimpse of the strategy for Branksome Hall Canada.

At the ceremony, more than 80 guests including Canada’s Ambassador to Korea, Ted Lipman, senior representatives from Korea’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC) were able to preview the new Branksome Hall, which is set to open on Jeju Island in September 2012.

The evening was also for current parents, alumnae and several new families interested in Branksome Hall Canada’s Residence Program to hear about some of the recent developments on the Toronto campus and planned future enhancements to facilities.

The launch of the Web site, according to Murton, was “the biggest part of the evening.” “We’ve really worked hard getting our Web site prepared,” Murton said with a mile-wide smile, highlighting Peter Kenny’s devotion to this project.

“You will learn so much information, by going to the Web site; the progress of the school building … about what the school will look like and programs it will offer,” she continued.

Along with several video clips where Branksome Hall students from Korea witness the major strengths of the school, it includes some essential steps for application to Branksome Hall Asia, curriculum, residence life, job descriptions for Branksome Hall Asia educators, employment opportunities at the new Jeju campus, and recruitment schedule.

Admission details, application information and forms, according to the Web site, will be available from May, 2011. The Web site will be updated with detailed information on a regular basis. This can be viewed at branksomehallasia.org.

Principal Karen Murton told The Jeju Weekly in an interview prior to the ceremony, “We’ve established the culture of care for our students. We’ve established [an] academic program that we think is second to none in the world with the implementation of an International Baccalaureate program from Kindergarten to grade 12.”

She added that “we have co-curricular components of a school life that we are very excited about bringing to Jeju Island,” noting that Branksome Hall’s exchange program and residential trips involving both Branksome Hall Asia and Branksome Hall Canada can be a rare opportunity for students.

“I really look forward to embracing the unique features of culture and environment of Jeju Island and Korea,” Murton said.

The renowned Canadian school became the second partner school to commit to opening at the Jeju Global Education City with the signing of a contract on July 14 this year, following the North London Collegiate School which is slated to open its Jeju campus in September 2011.

The Jeju Global Education City is an ambitious government-led national project spearheaded by the JDC on 3.8 million square meters of land at Daejung, Seogwipo. The self-contained education city aims to attract a number of prestigious foreign schools, educating students both from Korea, and other neighboring countries.

Principal Murton told the gathering that the new Jeju campus will “enable more Korean students to obtain a high-quality Branksome Hall education without leaving Korean soil. It will also provide access to a Branksome education for a greater number of students throughout northeast Asia.”

“To me, it’s more than a school,” said Peter Kenny, Branksome Hall Asia Project Manager who set the vision for the Branksome Hall Jeju campus from the beginning. He ran the feasibility study and contributed to making the “possibility” a reality.

“This is really a bonding of two nations, two entirely different cultures. There is the Canadian culture and Korea Jeju culture, but there is also an aspect of philosophy of internationalism which combines all of us,” Peter said. He has also been working hard to get the design concept finalized for the new school with its construction team.

“That’s not a franchise of a school, but a sister school of Branksome Hall.”
