From July 20 through Aug. 9, the Jeju Seaside Art Center in Tapdong will host the 17th annual Summer Night Music Festival. The biggest music festival on the island, it promises to be an exciting mix of fine arts and pop music, and will feature several arts exhibitions as well as a series of lectures on the arts.

The festival starts at 8 p.m. on July 20 with an opening ceremony featuring a philharmonic orchestra and choir, setting the stage for several weeks of continued performances sure to amaze and delight everyone from fans of Korean pop music to classical audiences. In addition to the wide variety of music, several dance performances and plays add another element to the lineup.

The festival began 17 years ago in 1994. Kim Young Soo, of Jeju’s Culture and Sports Division, described how the festival evolved into what it is today. “In 1994, there was no event that could be called a festival. With the construction of Tapdong Square, we tried to promote square culture to Jeju residents and to provide an opportunity to perform for Jeju artists. It also gave tourists a chance to enjoy Jeju at night. We hope that people can visit with their families and enjoy the night.”

In past years, memorable performances included one by the group Urangel Voice in 2009, which featured six young male singers performing a variety of musical genres.

This year, must-see performances include iint Band from Seoul on July 24, a contemporary performance on Aug. 1 and “Kim Sang Bong, the Nice Guy,” a traditional Korean operatic play, on Aug. 8.

In addition, there will be a short talk given before each performance. A series of lectures on the arts will be held throughout the festival, as well as visual arts exhibitions including illustrated poems, stone walls, environmental photos and street performances.

The Jeju Seaside Art Center is located near E-Mart in Tapdong.
