The session was scheduled to be held starting at 3 p.m. September 18, at Kim-jeong community center. Several government and the MOLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) officials, including Jeju Mayor Lee Sang-soon, were going to attend.

Opposition forces, however, blocked the entrance to the community center from 2 p.m., requesting a total reassessment on the plan to build the 2nd airport in Jeju.

Kang Won-Bo, the commissioner of Opposition Committee said, “We have been raising questions about inappropriate procedures and service issues, but they have not been answered. We have been asking procedural justification to be secured after the rise of Moon Jae-in administration, but nothing has improved. The session is merely a tool to advertise the 2nd Jeju airport.”

Eventually, around 2:50 p.m., Heo Beob-Yool, the deputy mayor of Seogwipo, and Kang Won-Bo, the commissioner of Opposition Committee, met each other to come to a negotiation. However, they failed to come to an agreement.

Lee Sang-soon, the Mayor of Jeju, eventually called off the session at approximately 3:32 p.m.

The mayor said, “A lot of local residents wondered about the details of the 2nd airport. This briefing session was meant for people’s right to know.” He added, “I apologize to citizens of Seogwipo City. I will be answering all questions through the MOLIT.”
