The cause: Jeju Migrant Women’s Shelter
Our chosen beneficiary is the Jeju Migrant Women’s Shelter which supports victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
The shelter protects 12 vulnerable members of Jeju’s multicultural community including some children. The women protected there are from the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Nepal, Mongolia and Cambodia.
After suffering domestic and sexual violence at the hands of their spouses, the women had nowhere to turn but the shelter. The shelter provides accommodation and income-generating opportunities for the women who are trained in handicrafts such as traditional Korean paper making.
All money raised will help the women to stand on their own two feet by contributing to a fund to secure a permanent property. They currently occupy temporary rented accommodation.
Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the shelter, its location cannot be revealed. The women are in hiding from their husbands and are receiving counselling and medical support. The shelter manager, Kim San-ok, will be at Malt 9 on the night to introduce her work.
We look forward to seeing many members of Jeju’s community at the event on July 25 to support this cause.
