The province and citizen groups have developed a “Low-carbon environmentally-friendly lifestyles roadmap” to reduce non-industrial greenhouse gas emissions. 46 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are from the non-industrial sector amounting to nearly 2 million tons.

The Jeju Green Start Network, in partnership with eight civic groups and Jeju province, plans to implement eight projects including conducting household and business greenhouse gas emissions diagnosis and consulting. It will also introduce environmentally-friendly lifestyles culture, provide climate change education and more.

The program will initially target 1,375 households who will be assessed and given guidance in reducing emissions as part of the “Environmentally-Friendly Lifestyles Movement.”

City institutions, groups and businesses will join the scheme and target businesses, schools and apartment complexes to educate about the severity of climate change. There is also a plan to implement a “One Green Movement Per Institute” initiative with three selected institutes.

Further, the province intends to roll out a variety of climate change education programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce energy use and improve awareness among the populace:

- a children’s climate school for kindergarten and daycare (held 45 times for 1,000 students);
- a climate school for adult residents implemented by civic centers and civic groups (held 10 times for 1,000 people);
- a garden cultivation school (one school/100 households)
- the Metropolitan Green Classroom biological garden (held four times for 160 people)

There will also be continued expansion of the carbon point system to 88,000 households and the extension of the cycling mileage campaign to 400 cyclists.

Due to Jeju’s strong performance in its green campaign last year it received 30 million won from the Ministry of Environment.
