One of the most memorable vacations I’ve taken in Korea to date has been the road trip down National Road 7. Stretching 350 kilometers along the east coast from Goseong all the way down to Busan it makes for a comfortable weeklong journey.

Aside from plenty of historical landmarks like the peaceful Cheongganjeong Pavilion and the incredible, cliff-hugging Naksan Temple, the picturesque seaside flavors of Geojin Harbor and Yongdeok, with its abundance of crab restaurants, are also must-see spots.

Winding roads weave in and out of fishing villages full of homes with colorful shingled rooftops. Stave off the heat and even pitch a tent for the night on one of Korea’s best beaches just north of Pohang.
Life moves at a refreshingly slow pace here, a welcome reprieve from the mad urban rush.

Getting there: Best bet is to head straight to Gangneung. Yeongdong Expressway (Highway 50) from Seoul to Gangneung takes roughly two hours. From Gangneung, National Road 7 runs north to south.
Alternatively, get on Highway 44 from Seoul and take it all the way to Goseong. Slightly more traffic-prone, but an option nonetheless. From Goseong, just keep to National Road 7. Signs are clearly marked.
